Greensfelder Park, St. Louis County, Mo.

Greensfelder is just north of Six Flags outside of St. Louis, Mo.

The town is called Eureka. Take the Six Flags exit and go straight on Allentown Road, it winds around for a bit, pass up the first Scenic Loop Road and you will see the campground just off the second Scenic Loop Road turn.

You can call and reserve a spot, the primitive and electric spots cost the same, $12/night, so get the electric while you can. The electric spaces are 21-29, see the map below for their locations .

The campground has showers and bathrooms, and a round pen, as well as a covered set of stalls to tie your horse up overnight. The electric slots have no hitching posts, but you can use a rope between trees to tie up your horses if you do not want to use the stalls. The primitive slots have a hitch, but they are not very deep parking areas, if you have a long trailer you will likely have to unhook your truck.

Every slot, including the primitives have a campfire ring and barbecue pit, some have picnic tables, but not all of them. The water is a spigot on the building that houses the showers and bathrooms. A 50 foot hose will reach all the covered stalls, or you can use buckets. There are additional water pumps in the primitive area, these are the old style pumps. There are a few outhouses on the trails.

Now for the trails, they are very vertical, with many creeks passing through the area. They are very rocky, horseshoes or hoof boots are necessary. They change the trails from time to time, we found a new trail they were cutting the last time we went there. There is also a trail with jumps set up, not logs across the trail, but actual equestrian jumps out in the woods.

I really liked riding here, there is a lot of interesting terrain, and some challenging trails, they seem to be very equine friendly. You will see some mountain bikers and hikers, but they are quite polite. Of course they arent on a half ton of animal, so they dont have much choice. There is a good mix of hills and glades and plenty of nice spots to rest.

Whats nice is that you are literally minutes from all the comforts of city life, gas stations, convenience stores, department stores, if you need to fix a tire or have some other emergency you can get it taken care of without a problem. There is even a nice hotel if you woos out and cant take camping, it is about a minute away from the campground.
